The "Seven Wonders of the World"
were works of art and architecture regarded by ancient Greek and Roman
observers as the most extraordinary structures of antiquity. In the
ancient world there were seven great man-made structures for travelers to
see on a world tour. Lists of the so-called seven wonders of the world
sometimes varied. Likewise, these "modern wonders" tend
towards the sensational and are truly wonders. Like the seven wonders of
antiquity, these modern wonders are, as they say in German, very "sehenswuerdig"--
very worth seeing.
That is the ultimate test of a
"wonder." Would you travel hundreds of miles, even thousands of
miles to see it? Does its fame precede it and beholding it validates all
the hype surrounding it?
