The skyline of the city of St. Louis, Missouri, is dominated by
the stainless steel Gateway Arch, rising 192 m (630 ft). It was designed by
the Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, after the
famed architect's death. The arch has an observation deck on top. It was built
to commemorate the role of Saint Louis as gateway to the West and is part of
the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Historic Site.
