The spin of the earth on its axis is very gradually slowing down. This is because of the friction of the tides dragging water back and forth around the surface. From growth lines on coral, scientists have worked out that 400 million years ago, a year was about 400 days long, as opposed to today's calendar based on a calculation of some approximately 365 days needed to spin rotate once around the sun. Back in those days, however, the Earth was spinning faster, and so produced shorter days... that is, days lasted less than the 24 hours or so that makes up one day today.
